Columbia, MO - Fiber Design, TRAINEE CONSULTANT

If you have the drive to quickly learn a new, in-demand skill and work well independently, our Fibersmith team of fiber designers are interested in training you for a new career opportunity.

 

The Trainee Consultant (full-time, entry-level position) will be responsible for learning how to design various styles of small and large fiber-optic outside plant networks to meet customer requirements. Work will be done primarily within ArcMap, CAD, and related systems, while information sources drawn from will include, but may not be limited to, paper maps, aerial imagery, census data, and ESRI data of existing networks. This role will grow to be customer facing, so we need energetic applicants with strong communication and organizational skills. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Generate designs for new projects based on customer requirements.

  • Devise methods of improving existing designs from both a cost and functional perspective.

  • Develop network designs using information provided by field collectors, customers, and Engineers to support field staking, permitting, contracting, and construction.

  • Maintain designs and drawings in Fibersmith’s document management system.

  • Assist in developing accurate cost projections of design to support decision making, contracting, and eventual construction.

  • Become and stay knowledgeable on relevant products which may be applicable to customers’ needs in the opto-electric, laser and fiber optic fields.

  • Provide services in a professional manner, adhering to all Fibersmith standards as identified and communicated in subsequent employee training.

  • Generate field maps for use during staking and inspection.

  • Create and update digital maps reflective of customer requirements.

  • Run analysis on fiber routes and described network assets (e.g. homes within a given proximity to fiber plant).

  • Collect data on points of interest in the field, including poles, foreign utilities, and other features as necessary, using Trimbles, Topcons, Ikes and similar units.

  • Identify, meet and/or exceed client expectations within defined parameters related to delivery of services, quality, revenue, and sales goals.

  • Develop and maintain technical competencies as defined by departmental management.

  • Other duties as required. 

 

Qualifications and Preferred Experience 

  • High School diploma

  • Bachelors degree, not required

  • Work within a team environment.

  • Current valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and clean driving record. 

  • Employees must keep current their own laptop and cell phone. Fibersmith is a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) environment.

  • Competent in writing business communications.

  • Self-directed

  • High degree of accuracy and accountability

  • Ability to quickly pick up new concepts and meet deadlines

This is an entry level position in the Columbia, Missouri office and will be trained in a class environment with the intentions of developing a team of assistant consultants.
